Writing Ideas are Everywhere — Part 2 Some Exercises and Incantations

In my first article on discovering writing ideas, I scratched the surface of this topic. But based on the feedback I got, I also scratched an itch which vexes many writers. Apparently, “writer’s block” is a common and frequent problem for many good writers on Medium.

If this affliction is familiar to you, you will here soon discover a few “tricks” to break the logjam. These stratagems have been very successful for me — so successful, in fact that I always seem to have many more projects in the works than I can ever complete. I know what you’re thinking. I’m not complaining. It’s a great problem for a writer to have!

Here are a couple of techniques which I have found very useful in generating ideas:

Technique #1: Purposeful Reminiscing

The first one, I call purposeful reminiscing. Begin by dredging up a memory — any memory — hopefully one which you haven’t thought of in a while. I start this exercise by trying to remember friends from grade school, or from junior high school… or from high…
